A devastating fire erupted in the middle of the night at Kharagpur IIT, resulting in the destruction of numerous documents and belongings stored in the LBS Hall common room. Fire engines from Kharagpur and Salua swiftly arrived at the scene and managed to control the situation. The institute has launched an inquiry into the incident.
The fire incident occurred around 3 am on Sunday, catching the IIT Kharagpur campus off guard while students were fast asleep. Flames engulfed the common room of Lal Bahadur Shastri Hall, consuming various items, including students' beds.
According to sources, thick black smoke filled the LBS Hall common room on Sunday morning, prompting an immediate alert to the fire department. Two fire engines from Kharagpur and Salua arrived promptly and battled the fire for about an hour.
Following the incident, a senior administrative officer from IIT Kharagpur visited the site and ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. The official personally inspected the situation to assess the extent of the damage.
Despite the complete destruction of the common room's contents, concerns have been raised regarding the effectiveness of the fire-fighting system in this esteemed educational institution. Questions are being raised about the adequacy of the fire safety measures.
Notably, Kharagpur IIT faced a similar fire incident a few years ago in the helipad area, which resulted in the spread of fire over approximately one kilometer of the campus. The recent fire outbreak has created panic within the campus community.
The cause of the fire remains uncertain, although initial reports suggest a possible short circuit. However, a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the incident.
